One Meeellion Dollars
A couple of weeks ago we put down a very large deposit with a local lumber company to have some siding and trim custom-milled from salvaged redwood.
We don't have an arrival date yet, but it should be somewhere around the end of August. We'll be gathering a small horde of people to help us with priming it and installing it around then, but notice will be short because we don't know precisely when it will arrive yet. We have a couple of helpers already on hand, but we can always use more. If you are local and want to join us, drop us an email. Food and drinks provided.
I am super, super, super excited about this. The siding-less base of the house has been an eyesore for a while (though to be clear, it's covered with exterior-grade plywood and is perfectly weathertight; this is an aesthetic thing only). And finding this mill and arranging for custom-milled pieces was not exactly the easiest thing, though they are just down in Watsonville as it happens.
Also, we started playing around with paint colours, since after the siding is installed it will need to be painted, and we're not stuck with the same colour as the rest of the house to save money, as we were when we first painted the house so many years ago.
